Facts About AIPL

 Educator

AIPL produces information to help dairy farmers select the best cows and bulls to be parents. The best cows and bulls produce the best calves.

  • 500,000 bulls evaluated
  • 20 million cows evaluated

 Computer

AIPL maintains the national database of milk production records. USDA has collected these records since 1895. All the records since 1960 are stored in a computer database at AIPL. The milk records can be studied to learn how to produce milk more efficiently.

 Board

Just like people, many factors combine to make each individual calf unique. AIPL figures out better ways to tell how genetics contribute. This helps predict what the calf of a particular Mom and Pop might be like.

Cow

AIPL provides genetic listings of the top bulls and cows 4 times per year for the U.S. and international dairy industries.

 DNA

Cow traits being improved through genetic selection

  • Amount of milk each cow produces
  • Amount of fat in milk
  • Amount of protein in milk
  • Udder health
  • Length of life
  • Trouble-free birth of calves

 Chart

Because of improved genetics, the cows born each year will be able to produce 30 more gallons of milk a year than the cows born the year before.
